Americans cannot count on politicians to put their needs first while
they are sidetracked, appeasing special interests to give them a permanent hold
on their offices and their heavily corporate-financed personal life.
It's time for courageous ideas and revolutionary action.
Stan Cotton founder of patrioticallycorrect.org has devised a plan to
help rid Capitol Hill of politicians tainted by fat cat cash. His "Sleep in the Lincoln bedroom"
sweepstakes will easily raise tens of millions of dollars for candidates running
honest campaigns for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
It's a bitter irony that many of today's
office holders offer their cash-donor buddies opportunities to sleep in the
Lincoln bedroom at the White House as a payback for helping to fund their
campaigns with influence-pedaled dollars.
Abraham Lincoln would spin in his grave if he
knew how much Washington has changed since he served his country as a
Congressman and President more than 150 years ago.
Abe was known for his honesty, a trait not
commonly found in the Nation's Capitol any more. And his difficult climb from impoverished childhood to
successful lawyer and, eventually, to the White House, means nothing to politicians
born with a silver spoon in their mouths and ill-gotten greenbacks in their
pockets.
Many citizens believe the only way to liberate politicians and
candidates from reliance on strings-attached cash is to replace it with "legitimate money" raised by the people, not the fat cats. Americans who want to run for the U.S.
House, and are truly interested in serving their constituents, can use the
money raised by sweepstakes ticket sales to help pay election costs.
"The sweepstakes would be above-board financing," Cotton vowed.
Every person who'd like to spend a night in the Lincoln bedroom can
purchase a ticket for $5 bill with Lincoln's own image on it. The money would be pooled and then
distributed among office seekers who'll remember where the money came from US
citizens who seek only fair representation, without favoritism, in return.
Citizens who've had to deal with economic chaos at home and overseas
unrest that could land an Iranian nuke in their back yards or shut off the flow
of foreign oil should be livid with outrage by the wholesale buying and selling
of elected representatives in Congress.
